Book Title: Postmodern India: Literature, Film, and Drama
Concept Note
The word ‘postmodernism’ comes across in varied facets, straying the readers and speakers from its specific interpretation and meaning. Jean-Francois Lyotard, in his book The Postmodern Condition: A Report on Knowledge (1979), defined the term with the statement, “Simplifying to the extreme, I define postmodern as incredulity towards metanarratives.” It means disbelief in ‘any grand theory’. Lyotard suggests that we should not just listen to one story or one narrative, because there are multiple stories behind a story. Therefore, we should listen to small narratives and not just metanarratives. In this context, mind must be open to all form of stories and narratives of knowledge. Today, India is one of the very few nations which can call itself a true ‘postmodern’. We, in India, celebrate diversity and heterogeneity of ideas, philosophy, literature, language, theatre, culture, tradition, gender, religion, art, architecture, film, dance, music, food, knowledge, and many more. From the ancient times, the Indian knowledge system (IKS) and philosophy are based on the postmodern conception; there is no absolute truth, rather only narratives. With this introspection, this book is going to be an agglomeration of postmodern Indian narratives which have been somehow lost in the hysteria of war, power-struggle, colonialism, western modernity and progress, elite historiography, rapid industrialization and Macaulay's knowledge system. This book is an attempt to put forward the Indian postmodern narratives to the global stage by bringing together the media of Indian arts, literature, drama and film, and passing them through the prism of postmodernism, thus forming a rainbow of Indian culture, philosophy, and knowledge system. Some of the major themes are suggested below but are not limited to:
